I never had the ideal childhood. I was adopted at a young age, only to lose my adopted mom to a tragic illness shortly after. The stepmother and her four children were not kind to me, and I often felt like I didn’t belong anywhere.
But through all the pain and heartache, one thing has remained constant in my life – cycling. Cycling races have become my therapy, my escape, my way of healing from the wounds of my past.
When I’m on my bike, flying down the road with the wind in my hair and the sun on my face, I feel free. I feel strong. I feel like I can conquer anything that comes my way. The physical exertion of cycling not only helps me stay in shape, but it also helps me clear my mind and release any pent-up emotions I may be holding onto.
There have been countless times when I’ve pedaled through tears, pushing myself to go faster and harder, using the pain as fuel to propel me forward. And every time I cross that finish line, I feel a sense of accomplishment and pride that no one can take away from me.
Exercise, especially cycling, has been proven to have a positive impact on mental health. It releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones that can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. It also provides a sense of control and empowerment, which is especially important for those who have experienced trauma or difficult circumstances in their past.
For me, cycling races are not just a hobby or a form of exercise – they are my lifeline. They are what keep me going when the days are dark and the memories of my past threaten to overwhelm me. They remind me that I am strong, resilient, and capable of overcoming anything that comes my way.
So if you’re struggling with your own demons, I encourage you to find your own form of therapy, whether it’s cycling, running, yoga, or any other physical activity that brings you joy and peace.
Allow yourself to release the pain and hurt through movement, and watch as the healing begins to take place.
Remember, you are not defined by your past or your circumstances. You have the power to create your own path to healing and happiness. And sometimes, all it takes is a bike, a road, and the determination to keep moving forward.
